When we launched pet comics in 2024 we thought it was a fun side category. It is now one of our top three. People are not joking around about their pets.

Here's the honest guide to making one that feels right.

The two reasons people order them The first is celebration — a gotcha day, a tenth birthday, the dog turning ten and still acting two. The second, and bigger than I expected, is memorial. A way to put years of life with a pet on a shelf you can pick up.

Both work. The briefs are different.

For a celebration pet comic Lean cartoon style, bright, friendly. Give the pet a "power" that's really just one of their actual behaviors:

  • the cat who knocks every glass off every table (water-bending hero)
  • the small dog who thinks he runs the building (security chief)
  • the rabbit who has opinions about every vegetable (food critic)

For a memorial pet comic Slower. Cinematic style works here. Twelve pages of "a day in the life" of the pet — morning walk, that one spot on the couch, the way they greeted you. End on a quiet, warm panel. Don't try to address the loss explicitly — the gift itself does that.

Reference photos for pets - 2–3 photos minimum. - Daylight, no flash. - One straight-on, one from the side. - Mention their distinguishing features in the brief: the one white paw, the crooked ear, the scar on their nose. Models miss these otherwise.

The detail customers always forget Put the pet's *name* in the brief multiple times. Not just "my dog" — Maple, Maple, Maple. Our model uses the name in the dialogue and inside the world of the comic, and it makes the whole thing feel real instead of generic.

Also: if you have multiple pets, include them all. We've shipped a lot of comics where someone forgot to mention the second cat and we had to redo it.
